Sydney’s New Metro Stations Win Big at the 2025 NSW Architecture Awards
Eight of Sydney’s new metro stations have been celebrated as “legacy-making” at this year’s NSW Architecture Awards.
The stations at Central, Barangaroo, Gadigal, Victoria Cross, Martin Place, Waterloo, Sydenham and Crows Nest have taken home two of the highest honours: the NSW Architecture Medallion and the Lloyd Rees Award for Urban Design.

These stations have been recognised for more than their striking design. They represent a shift in how infrastructure can support seamless travel while enhancing long‑term city planning, connectivity and culture.
The judges called the stations “legacy-making” for a reason — it took a huge team of architects, engineers, landscape designers and public artists working across disciplines to create spaces that stand out and stand the test of time.
Each station has been built with accessibility and comfort in mind, making getting around Sydney smoother and more enjoyable.
They also fit into their neighbourhoods naturally, creating spaces that people can use and connect with every day.
More than 130 projects were shortlisted at this year’s NSW Architecture Awards. Other notable winners include:
- Public Architecture: Yarrila Place – BVN
- Educational Architecture: St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Rosebery – Neeson Murcutt Neille
- Residential Architecture – Houses: New Castle – Anthony St John Parsons
- Commercial Architecture: 39 Martin Place – Tzannes
- Heritage Architecture: White Bay Power Station – Design 5 Architects with Placemaking NSW
- Urban Design: Sydney Metro City Stations – Sydney Metro
- Enduring Architecture: Moore Park Gardens – AJC Architects
Among the winners was the first building in Bradfield, a growing city near the new Western Sydney Airport, which claimed the Premier’s Prize.
The new Sydney Metro stations aren’t just a win for architects and planners — they’re a win for the city. They set a new standard for how urban spaces can support connectivity, culture and long‑term growth.
