14. Visit Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary

The author, Kate, stands beside a turtle hatchery pool with baby turtles in Gili Meno, highlighting the conservation efforts as one of the unique things to do in Gili Islands.

Tucked away on the serene shores of Gili Meno, there’s a place that’s close to my heart – the Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary.

This tiny but mighty sanctuary is a testament to the island’s commitment to wildlife preservation.

It’s not just any spot on the beach; it’s a beacon of hope for the future of turtles.

The sanctuary started with a simple yet profound aim: to protect and nurture the island’s turtle population.

It’s fascinating how these creatures are given a fighting chance here. From the moment they hatch, turtles face a perilous journey to the sea, and many don’t make it.

That’s where the sanctuary steps in, providing a safe haven for these hatchlings to grow strong enough to take on the big blue.

Here’s how it works – the sanctuary gathers turtle eggs from the beach and provides a secure environment for them to hatch.

These little hatchlings are cared for until they’re hearty and robust, ready to be released into the ocean.

It’s a beautiful cycle of life, and witnessing a turtle release is something truly special.

Imagine the tiny turtles, once vulnerable, now strong and eager, making their way into the sea – it’s a moment of pure joy and a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on our planet’s future.

Visiting the sanctuary doesn’t just offer an opportunity to learn about turtles; it’s a chance to contribute to their preservation.

The sanctuary operates on donations, and every little bit helps. It’s a small area, easy to miss if you’re not looking, but finding it is part of the adventure.

Look for the sign under the corrugated iron, pointing you towards this little patch of hope.

Looking at these little turtles and watch them swim is one of the best things to do in Gili Meno!

15. Watch the Sunset at Gili Trawangan

Kate enjoys a serene moment on the famous Ombak Sunset swing in the Gili Islands, silhouetted against a stunning sunset framed by an artistic golden arch. Swinging here is a must-do among the many Gili Islands activities, offering a perfect blend of adventure and relaxation.

One of the must-do activities when visiting the Gili Islands is watching the sunset at Gili Trawangan.

It’s an experience that combines the serene beauty of nature with a touch of iconic island culture.

The sunset in front of Ombak Sunset is particularly special and comes highly recommended for anyone looking to capture a memorable moment or soak in the breathtaking views.

The area around Ombak Sunset offers one of the best views of the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in orange, pink, and purple hues.

The calm sea reflects these colours, creating a double spectacle that’s truly mesmerising.

Adding to the allure is the famous big swing located right on the beach in front of Ombak Sunset.

This isn’t just any swing – it’s become a symbol of the Gili Islands, offering a unique way to experience the sunset.

Sitting on the swing with the ocean around you and the sunset in front, you can’t help but feel a deep connection to the beauty of the island.

It’s also the perfect spot for that Instagram-worthy post that will make your friends and followers wish they were there with you.

16. Rent A Bike & Cycle Around Gili Trawangan

Row of colorful bicycles lined up for rent on a promenade in the Gili Islands, with a backdrop of a vibrant beach cabana with pink cushions. Biking is a popular and eco-friendly activity among the many things to do in Gili Islands, perfect for exploring the scenic beauty of the area.

Getting around Gili Trawangan on two wheels is an absolute joy and hands down one of the best ways to explore the island’s hidden gems.

With no cars or motorbikes allowed, the island has a laid-back vibe that makes cycling not just convenient but incredibly enjoyable.

Renting a bike on Gili T is easy and affordable. You’ll find rental spots dotted all around the island, often with a range of bikes to choose from.

Whether you prefer a simple pushbike or something a bit more robust for off-road adventures, there’s something for everyone.

You can pedal along the coastline, feeling the ocean breeze against your skin and stopping off at beaches whenever one takes your fancy.

It’s the freedom to explore every nook and cranny of the island, from the bustling marketplaces to the serene sunset spots, that makes cycling such a wonderful experience.

The island’s circumference can be covered in just a couple of hours, but why rush?

Take your time, soak in the views, and make impromptu stops at beachside cafes for a refreshing coconut or a bite to eat.

Remember to bring along a hat and sunscreen, as the sun can be quite strong, especially around midday.

18. Climb Gili Trawangan Hilltop Hiking View Point

Nestled among the enchanting trio of the Gili Islands, Gili Trawangan’s hilltop offers a unique adventure that combines a touch of history with the island’s stunning natural beauty.

Starting your ascent, you’re greeted by a tranquil shrine next to a Muslim burial ground, setting a reflective tone for the adventure ahead.

This secluded spot invites visitors to pause and soak in the peaceful atmosphere, bridging the gap between the present and the island’s rich history.

As you continue upwards, the path unveils the remnants of a World War II Japanese machine-gun bunker, a poignant reminder of the island’s historical significance.

Standing as silent sentinels of the past, these ruins offer a glimpse into the tumultuous times Gili Trawangan once witnessed.

The pinnacle of this journey is the breathtaking view from the summit.

Visitors are rewarded with a panoramic vista of azure waters and the majestic Mount Rinjani on Lombok’s horizon.

This unparalleled view encapsulates the serene beauty of the Gilis and beyond, making it a must-visit for anyone seeking a different perspective.

The climb, described as a short walk on a rugged path without stairs, leads to a viewpoint where on a clear day, you can see Gili Meno, Gili Air, Lombok, Bali, and even Nusa Penida in the distance.

The hilltop, being the highest point on Gili Trawangan, is accessible via Jl. Sunset road for a gentle climb or a slightly rocky ascent from the southwestern part of the island.

Both routes are manageable, taking about 15 minutes to reach the peak, where the other Gilis and even Bali islands are visible.

Notably, the hilltop serves as an evacuation zone, being the highest point on the island.

19. Enjoy Fresh, Local Seafood

The author, Kate, at a beachfront restaurant in the Gili Islands, enjoying local seafood cuisine, with a grilled lobster and skewered meat on the table, and a cocktail in hand. This dining experience highlights the culinary delights as one of the many things to do in Gili Islands.

When visiting Gili Trawangan, indulging in fresh, local seafood is an absolute must.

One standout experience we had was at Scallywags Restaurant, a place that promises delicious meals and delivers an engaging dining experience.

Here, the barbecue concept allows you to pick your preferred seafood or meat, accompanied by a choice of sides and the freedom to craft your own salad at their extensive salad bar.

My husband opted for the lobster, while I couldn’t resist the allure of the spare ribs.

Both choices turned out to be exceptionally yummy, bursting with flavours that perfectly encapsulate the island’s culinary offerings.

However, a small word of advice: arriving earlier than you might at other dining spots is wise.

Scallywags Restaurant is quite popular, and they can get very busy, leading to a bit of a wait for your food.

But trust me, the mouth-watering dishes are well worth the wait.

For those eager to explore beyond a single spot, Gili Trawangan does not disappoint.

Another gem in the area is EGO RESTAURANT & SEAFOOD BBQ, a beachfront haven for seafood lovers.

With the gentle sound of waves in the background and a picturesque view complementing your meal, the setting is as delightful as the cuisine is exquisite.

20. Eat in A Warung

Four friends enjoying a meal at Pink Warung, a local eatery in the Gili Islands, with a casual setting and a wall adorned with colourful postcards. Sharing a meal here is a relaxing and authentic thing to do in the Gili Islands, perfect for travellers seeking cultural experiences
At Pink Warung

One of the highlights of exploring Gili Trawangan is the opportunity to dine in a warung, the local eateries that offer a dive into authentic Indonesian cuisine without stretching your budget.

My adventures led me to discover some fantastic spots serving delicious food with generous warmth and hospitality.

Lalapoe Resto Indonesia was my first stop. Here, I decided to try their best seller, Nasi Campur, and it did not disappoint.

This dish, a vibrant mix of flavours and textures, is as kind to your taste buds as it is to your wallet.

The experience of savouring such authentic food in a simple, unpretentious setting is a reminder of the joy of culinary exploration.

Another gem that stole my heart is the Pink Warung. This quaint little spot might be easy to overlook due to its size, but the friendly staff make it impossible to forget.

Dining here feels like being welcomed into a family, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. A hearty meal can cost as little as $2, offering unbeatable value.

As for my personal favourites, Nasi Goreng and Mie Goreng always hit the spot.

These classic Indonesian dishes, with their perfect blend of spices and satisfying textures, are a must-try for anyone visiting the island.

Eating in a warung allows you to enjoy delicious food at a fraction of restaurant prices and offers a taste of the real Indonesia, far from the tourist traps.

So, when in Gili Trawangan, do as the locals do and grab a meal at a warung. It’s an experience that’s as rich in flavour as it is in authenticity.

Please note that I didn’t get Bali Belly from eating from these warungs, same as with my husband.

21. Watch An Outdoor Cinema at Aston Movie Night

Outdoor cinema on Gili Islands featuring free nightly movie showings, including titles like 'Mamma Mia', 'The Greatest Showman', and 'The Lion King', under a twilight sky. This is one of the unique things to do in Gili Islands, offering entertainment after sunset.

Imagine settling into a cozy beanbag on the soft sands of Gili Trawangan, with the ocean’s gentle waves as your backdrop and a star-studded sky above.

This dreamy scenario comes to life at Aston Movie Night, where the charm of cinema meets the unparalleled beauty of a beach setting.

Situated at the best sunset point on the island, in front of the Aston Hotel, this outdoor cinema offers a unique way to end your day.

The stunning natural surroundings elevate the experience.

As the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink and orange, you’re treated to an unforgettable view.

Then, as twilight fades to night, the screen lights up, bringing movies to life against the backdrop of the ocean and stars. It’s an ambience that makes life feel just that much better.

What sets this cinema apart is its accessibility and the added perks.

Admission to watch any of the two free movies shown daily is completely free.

To complement your movie-watching experience, popcorn and beer are available for purchase right on the beach.

The food here is noted for its generous portions and delicious taste, making it a highlight on the sunset strip post-pandemic.

The open-air cinema experience at Aston is casual and user-friendly.

You don’t need to order food or drink to enjoy the film, but if you wish to indulge, call over a server.

There’s no pressure, just the freedom to enjoy the evening as you please.

The service is attentive and designed to ensure you have everything you need for a perfect night out.

For the best experience, arriving between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. is recommended to secure a good spot, perhaps a small table, to enjoy the sunset before the movie starts.

At 7:30 p.m., the film begins, and you can settle into a beanbag, order food and drinks, and enjoy the show.

With two films screened each evening, the concept offers a wonderful way to spend an evening under the stars.

22. Experience A Balinese Massage at Gili Mo Spa & Hair Salon

On my journey through the serene landscapes of Gili Trawangan, I discovered a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation – Gili Mo Spa & Hair Salon.

Here, I indulged in the traditional Balinese massage, an experience that stands out as a highlight of my visit.

The Balinese massage, known for its therapeutic and holistic approach, blends gentle stretches, acupressure, and aromatherapy to stimulate the flow of blood, oxygen, and energy around your body, leaving you feeling deeply relaxed and revitalized.

Gili Mo Spa & Hair Salon’s welcoming atmosphere and skilled therapists offered an authentic experience of this traditional Balinese therapy.

The use of essential oils and the rhythmic, flowing strokes of the therapist’s hands worked wonders in melting away tension and stress.

But my pampering session didn’t stop there. I also treated myself to a cream bath hair treatment and a haircut, a luxurious experience that nourished and revitalized my hair, leaving it feeling soft, shiny, and healthy.

The cream bath, a popular beauty ritual in Bali, involves a rich conditioning treatment massaged into the scalp and hair, followed by a warm steam wrap.

It’s a must-try for anyone looking to give their hair a little extra love and care.

💡 Gili Mo Spa & Hair Salon is in front of Pink Warung. After you have a Balinese Massage and Hair Treatment, you can eat authentic Indonesian food at Pink Warung.

23. Visit Masjid Agung Baiturrahman

Masjid Agung Baiturrahman is a beautiful mosque that stands as a beacon of peace and open-mindedness.

The mosque itself is not just a place for worship but also a historical monument, preserving a piece of the past with a Japanese cannon from World War II within its walls.

This decision by the locals to keep the cannon inside the masjid is a profound statement of their desire to preserve history.

The people managing Masjid Agung Baiturrahman are incredibly friendly and welcoming, embodying the spirit of open-mindedness and diversity.

This attitude is a reflection of the broader community in Gili Trawangan and the neighbouring islands, Gili Air and Gili Meno.

Despite the island’s reputation as a party destination, it’s essential to remember that Indonesia is predominantly a Muslim country, and Gili T, being part of Lombok, shares this identity.

It’s disheartening to see negative reviews from visitors who complain about the island’s Islamic practices, such as the call to prayer at 5 am.

These criticisms reflect a lack of understanding and respect for the local culture and traditions.

The locals’ openness to diversity and different customs is a testament to their inclusivity, allowing visitors to enjoy the islands freely.

In return, visitors should show respect and mindfulness towards the indigenous people’s way of life.

I was particularly moved by the experience of performing Friday prayer at Masjid Agung Baiturrahman.

Amidst the tourist-centric environment of Gili Trawangan, the mosque stands as a serene sanctuary for the local Muslim community.

The mosque’s cool and calming interior, along with the whiteboards for Quran and Hadith lessons, highlight its role as both a place of worship and a centre for learning.

For visitors to Gili Trawangan, hearing the ezaan from our accommodation was a daily reminder of the island’s rich cultural tapestry.

The call to prayer, along with the recitations, is a deeply ingrained part of the local culture in Lombok, reflecting the community’s pride in their mosques and religious practices.

24. Play Golf at Gili Golf & Bar

Discovering Gili Golf and Bar was like stumbling upon a hidden treasure on the vibrant island of Gili Trawangan.

This delightful mini golf course offers an exceptional blend of fun, relaxation, and the unique company of friendly felines from the neighbouring cat café.

With an entry fee of just $5 AUD per person, it’s a wonderfully affordable way to spend an evening or late afternoon soaking in the island’s laid-back vibe.

The course boasts 18 holes, each nestled within a beautifully manicured garden brimming with lush plants, creating a serene backdrop for a friendly game or competitive fun.

The meticulous care taken to maintain the course and its surroundings is evident, providing players with a neat and tidy environment to enjoy their game.

One of the best times to visit Gili Golf is at night when the cooler air and ambient lighting create a magical setting for mini-golf.

The atmosphere is lively yet not overwhelming, making it a perfect nocturnal activity on Gili T.

Plus, the occasional visit from the sociable cats next door adds a charming twist to the game.

But the fun doesn’t stop at mini golf. Gili Golf and Bar is also equipped with a variety of free activities, including table tennis, darts, and even a basketball field, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

For those interested in the pool, the tables are available at a nominal fee, offering another layer of entertainment post-golf.

The bar serves up a selection of affordable drinks, allowing players to enjoy a cold beer or a refreshing beverage as they navigate the course.

This laid-back ambience and very friendly staff enhance the overall experience, making every visitor feel welcome and relaxed.

Gili Golf and Bar is indeed a hidden gem in Gili Trawangan, often described as pleasantly quiet and well-maintained.

25. Embrace Serenity at H20 Yoga and Meditation Centre
